My Entire Life Has Been A Lie / OM - Bedouin's Vigil

Until about 10 minutes ago, I thought I had listened to every single piece of music committed to tape by OM when Chris Hakius was drumming. Then I realized I had never actually listened to the Six Organs Of Admittance split.

Finding a new OM song is good enough to warrant one more post.

Unfortunately, in the process of finding this song, I also lost all grounding in my life and realized that everything I knew was a lie. Apparently, it's spelled HAKIUS and not HAIKUS. How the fuck did I, and much of the internet, get that wrong for so long? I even interviewed the guy for like an hour and still fucked it up.

Chris, if you're out there, I apologize for my unnknowledge.

What else in this world is a lie?

Electric Wizard @ All Tomorrow's Parties

In the vein of finally finishing the Chris Hakius interview, I'm finally going to finish this goddamn review of Electric Wizard. In the world of doom metal, Electric Wizard needs no introduction. If you read this blog you know them already. Seriously, their self-given title of "heaviest band in the universe" probably isn't a lie (unless there's some super gnarly heshers hanging out on fucking Pluto or something). While I wasn't lucky enough to get to properly interview the dudes, I did get to spend a little bit of time shooting the shit with Justin, Justin, Liz, and Taz. While they are all super chill people, they really come into their own on stage.

Looking over the schedule for ATP I saw that EW was going to be on the first night (my second night in the country) and I felt like a kid on Christmas eve. They haven't played a US gig in a crazy long time and since then they've put out a fuck ton of great albums, so I was stoked on having some war stories to bring back to the states. War stories would definitely be an apt term to describe the experience of seeing the Wizard in person.

Herder - Self-Titled LP

Sweet fucking fuck it's been a million years since I did one of these, but I'll be goodgoddamned if this album isn't worth it. This has been on nearly constant rotation since the beginning of April (along with The Devil's Blood recently... don't ask I'm not proud of it) and it is fucking fantastic. As far as I can tell these are a bunch of guys from the Netherlands who can't help but fucking crush it. If you're on a Weedeater/Tafkata/Eyehategod kick, dive into this shit. A Brief Discussion on Jackassery in Metal

Metal is a wonderful fucking thing, it brings lots of people together. It's loud, it's fast, it's nasty, and it's generally all the things music should be. Even the most ridiculous D&D loving, sword wielding, blousey medieval shirt wearing costume fantasy shit can be awesome. Paraphrasing Dio (RIP), it's basically a way to get away from it all, no matter who you are. That being said, there's a lot of lame metal and complete jackassery in the metal world. A few weeks ago I was forcefully reminded of this while at a great show in Brooklyn... minus for one band. Kommandant. Let me start by saying, that yes, I understand that metal makes a point of addressing the worst shit imaginable and beyond on the regular for whatever reasons people may have. Death, dismemberment, drug abuse, mental abuse, violence, war, blahblahfuckingblah. This is good. It gives it a place to go. However, there are some things out there that are just a shitty look. Kommandant managed to bring up most of those which is a shame because it really could have been a pretty decent set. Let's start with nazism. It's fucking lame, always. Sorry, you don't get a free pass on that one. There's no, "oh, well, you know... I mean..." Nope. Doesn't work. Don't care how good your band is or how nice you are to the sound guy or whatever else. If you cop to nazi shit, you are a dickhead. Full stop. So, when a band gets onstage in full blackshirt/boots/gasmasks/black and red draped flags, and a podium it's over before it starts. In a genre (inexfuckingsplicably in my opinion) riddled with openly racist and fascist bands, why on fucking earth a supposedly non-nazi band would adopt that iconography is beyond me, and a lot of other people at the show. For serious, and this topic came up in a bunch of different conversations that night, in a genre of music (Black Metal) subscribing to basic tenets of: - Fuck society - Fuck compliance - Fuck the herd - Be different - Chaos HOW IN THE FUCK CAN YOU ALSO BE A FASCIST? IT DOESN'T FUCKING WORK YOU JACKASSES. Not even in imagery. Not even in anything. And that goes for all of black metal. So yes, I'll fully admit their imagery worked on me. It pissed me off, it made me massively uncomfortable, and it made me walk out of the fucking room during a show with some other fantastic bands (i.e. Mutilation Rites). That being said, from a significantly less intellectual level, it looked pretty fucking cheesedick and tacky. Seriously... a podium on stage?

Spite Extreme Wing- Vltra

If you like Amebix, Ancient, Sacramentum, Vried, or Taake- this is for you. I'm a fan of all these bands (only early Ancient though) so it really hits the spot for me. Not to say that S.E.W. bite anyone's style in particular- in fact I find their particular Italian amalgamation of black metal to be quite original. But let's say you're cooking and there's something missing. This may be the spice you were looking for.

Hemorroid Carnage DEMO

Going to and playing shows in Japan, I've amassed quite a collection of demo CD's from bands trying to get their act off the ground. It's something I didn't experience much in NYC, so I appreciate the custom. Last night I played a gig with death metal masters Gotsu-Totsu-Kotsu (兀突骨) and it was my first time to experience them live. I may have heard a song or two by them, but I must have been multitasking or something at the time cause I had no idea what I was in for. They're a tight trio who play what they refer to as Samurai Death Metal. Needless to say, I'm suffering from the worst bangover in recent memory as I write this! After the gig, I talked with the guitarist Atsushi and he gave me a demo for his side-project called Hemorrhoid Carnage. Never before has a demo gone straight from my bag, and onto my speakers, but after last night's performance, I was definitely curious. The demo is so good, that I'm putting it right here for your listening pleasure. Go see Gotsu-Totsu-Kotsu or Hemorrhoid Carnage if you get the chance!

Raise Em Right

Glöm Dä is Good Shit

Just got sent a crazy ass Korean Pop video by a solid Swedish punker. Here's his band. I'm digging it, especially the vox. Somehow, it doesn't sound like the same old d-beat, clearer but harder. Cool shit for a Thursday D-beatdown fix.

MDF 2011 Final Day Recap

Main Room 1:15-8:15 (excluding Oak): If I hear another fucking blastbeat I am going find Miles Ratledge, punch a hole in his throat, and rape it.

Oak: Meh

Gravehill: These dudes are fucking great. I would never listen to this at home but these motherfuckers are working their asses off and look great doing it. And yes, that is the first time I've ever said that about a huge, sweaty man, in a spiked leather harness, covered in fake blood. Fuck yeah Gravehill.

Orange Goblin: If I hadn't locked my fucking keys in my truck this would have been the highlight of my day. They were everything I expected. Everything they were supposed to be. Nothing more. Nothing less. Just a bunch of dudes playing heavy rock. Nothing new or surprising or groundbreaking or mind blowing. Just good old fashioned stoner metal.

Nuclear Assault: In case you were wondering, the only way to have a successful band ever is to have Danny on bass. Seriously. Danny was the reason Mozart was a hit. He kickstarted the Rolling Fucking stones. He is probably Geezer Butler's father. And if you want a hit band, you must have him. Nuclear Assault, we love you, ease off the weirdo banter.

Bastard Noise: Well, ain't nobody like them around that's for fucking sure. Thank god somebody's keeping it interesting.

Coroner: Where the fuck have these dudes been? Ok so maybe their a little weird, and maybe they have some "funky" parts, but all and all one of the more interesting bands I've ever heard. Also, sweep picking into tapping into sweep picking without sounding like Yngwie J is pretty fucking impressive. Would see again.

Wormed/Last Days of Humanity: See Main Room 1:15-8:15 (excluding Oak). Also, refer to the 15minute grind rule.

Ghost: I'll have a post about this on Cvltnation one day. Way too much going on here for me to capture in one idiotic snarky comment.

MDF 3rd day Recap

Masakari: If I miss this fucking band one more time I'm gonna lose my shit. Godddamnit.

Creative Waste: This song was totally better the first 46x. Waittaminnit... isn't this a Machetazo covering Rotten Sound covering Carcass Covering Napalm Death cover?

Mammoth Grinder: I am ALL A-FUCKING-BOUT bands with "grind" in their name that play killer slow parts, crushing d-beat sections, and hardly ever use blastbeats. now if only we could get all the dis-bands to do the same. MamGr, yer ok! Also, Welcome to Hell is always the right choice.

Cretin: Well, that's brutal. It takes balls to rock a set of tits like that. Not that it makes any fucking difference. Once brutal, always brutal. Quote of the set, "Nothing I like more than titties except cock. As long as I don't have it..."

The Kill: "Mom Problems."

Nunslaughter: A solid candidate in the race for best one-liners. It's definitely gonna be close between these guys and Cretin. Come for the Hesh, stay for the standup. At least they rip hard at the hesher shit.

Acid Witch. If this is a joke it's already old. If it's serious, it should have been a joke. If it's both, it's still fucking lame. Bummer, totally wanted to like this little respite from fucking blastgrinddeath.

Voivod: Maybe, if I really devote myself to the study of metal, by the time I die, I may, possibly, be able to begin to wrap my puny mind around the might of Voivod.
... but probably not.

Exhorder: More good death metal. Nuff sed.

Hooded Menace: Hmmm... it's like the white dude, Finn version of Coffins. The one that hasn't been left in the Japanese-make-shit-all-totally-fuckedup-insane-creepy machine. That's in a good way though. It's pretty good. Problem: Hard not to laugh when thinking they should be named Hooded Pennis.

Stay Punk Kids

MDF Rundown Day 2

Fuck it, here's day 2!

Funebrarum: "The singer yells "FUCKING' METAL" a lot. That about sums it up.

Aura Noir: If Haunted Castle didn't suck we would have almost sounded like this. In our fucking dreams. And that's including the fact that they say shit like, "Here we go!"

Machetazo: Hearing dudes with fancy Castillian accents play meaty, gnarly grind is pretty funny. They'd make a killer doom band if they just played their opening riff for like 20 minutes though.

Cripple Bastard: Well, I guess we figured out where all the people in Italy actually getting shit done instead of sitting around drinking cappuccinos are... They're in Cripple Bastard making sure that we know the world has gone to the fucking dogs.

Corrosion of Conformity: Jesus, way to live the hardcore life fellas. At least it still sounds hardcore. Really hardcore. Shit, well this is pretty good! I'll be damned!

Neurosis: Still the best in the business. This band was absolutely worth tearing my shorts in to make pissing all over my left foot so I didn't lose my spot at the front gate [editors note: true story. I did that. It was worth it.]. Seriously, nothing heavier.

Exhumed: Oh, now I remember why I like death metal played by punks! Because it's fucking rad! That's why! And I don't even like deathgrind all that much.

Marduk: This sucks less than I thought it would! A lot less. Dunno why I thought this would suck but it's pretty rocknroll. Always a plus for black metalers to avoid the fucking synth.

The MDF 2011 Rundown Begins

As you might be able to figure out, I don't post here much anymore. I post slightly more at cvltnation (but not nearly enough to make Sean and Meg happy...) but that's a different thing. One of the main reasons for my lack of posting is sheer fucking laziness. Yeah, pretty much that's it. It takes a fuck ton of work to keep this shit updated and I got lazy about it apparently. The other main reason I don't post as much as I used to is because my fucking camera broke and it's gonna cost like $180 min to fix that shit. That's a huge bummer for me because I really like shooting pics and $180 isn't exactly piss change (yeah this is a real thing. Some places in Europe those bastards actually make you pay like 30 cents to take a fucking leak. Pretty weak huh?). Either way, it gives me a lot less shit to share with the internets. In lieu of my posting photos, just go check out the work of dudes like Fred and Samantha and co over at Brooklyn Vegan. They're at pretty much all the shows I'm at anyways.

However, now that I've apologized and begged on bendedfuckingknee for your collective forgiveness, I'm going to at least make some minimal effort to do a rundown of Maryland Death Fest 2011. Since I don't believe in fucking Twatter or whatnot I'm going to put all my useless blurbs here. Because of dead camera syndrome, in order to remember what the hell I had seen, I relied on a little notebook thingy in which I hand wrote my random retard thoughts. Now y'all gotta deal with them. I'll do 3 a day until they run out or something. Maybe some longer posts for bands that struck my fancy.

Here we goes... (NOTE: ALL PICTURES BLATANTLY AND UNREPENTANTLY STOLEN FROM BROOKLYNVEGAN.COM THANKS FRED)

Day 1:

Noisear:

Not being from New Mexico is rad because it means I'll never have to be as gnarly or fucked up as these dudes just to survive

Miasmal:

Ask a Swede "Who's better? Dismember, Anti-Cimex, or Candlemass?" If they're in this band they'll answer, "Yes." Also, the singer looks like my friend Barney John.

Flesh Parade:

If Mardi Gras had a retarded grindcore party with cockshaped pool noodles & crusties it'd be kinda like this, but prolly less fun. They're like the Weedeater of Grindcore.

EDIT: YOU PLAY FOR WAY TOO FUCKING LONG.

Extortion:

Your pleasant next door neighbors hardcore band. The one whose mom bakes rad cookies.

Buzzov*en:

Yup, still Buzzov*en. Thank fucking god.

Tragedy:

Seeing Tragedy is kinda hard to sum up in one sentence. Although when they played Conflicting Ideas I guess I could sum that up with, "NNNNNNGGGGGGHHHHH FFFFFFFUUUUUUUUUU *zblut* Ohhhhhhh...... mmmm......."

Cathedral:

You see that shirt? Yeah, that just about says it all. Amazing.

Rest in Peace Brant

One of the few good ones. A life lived with no regrets for sure. We're going to miss you man, you were a helluva guy.

NGNV Wednesday Fuck the World Mix

I haven't posted shit here in forever because fuck it, that's why. So, that's the name of this mixtape. Anyways, all apologies but I was feeling all motorhead d-beat inspired today, which lead me to listening to a bunch of shit that lead me to listening to a bunch of other shit, which lead me to throwing this all together in no particular order.

I got some other shit coming soon, and it'll be big, it's just taking a while. Enjoy.

Surf Grind

It's no secret that I'm still a surfer at heart. But when I'm surfing, the last thing going through my mind is two-beat poppunk or shitty indie electrogarbage. I got a little GoPro video camera and took it out for a surf the day after a big storm. Waves were awful and the water was cold. Perfect day to try out a new video camera!

Surfer is me, music is Magrudergrind.

BrooklynVegan Presents: Deafheaven - Violet (edit) from Roads To Judah by brooklynvegan

I really don't like Converge or most bands on Deathwish, but this band rips. American Black Metal from SF. Why the fuck are they on Deathwish? Who knows. What I do know is that they have a demo floating around. This track is from their Roads to Judah LP.

Stroking the "NYC Sucks" Comps

Fuck me. Well I realized a sad thing has finally come to pass- I started reading people's blogs who aren't my friends. I know, it's terrible. It's like a gateway drug. Soon enough I'll figure out how to work an RSS feed and then I'm totally face fucked. I blame my increased computer usage on Japan. I have to make all these reports now and watch banned TV online. Wah wah wahhh!

Well one good thing can come of all this before I'm a complete shut-in otaku type who eventually commits suicide; I found these pretty cool comps on metalsucks.net of NYC metal bands. Actually they just released VOL 2 today. I'm all for guilt-free and free-free downloading, not to mention promoting young guns. I haven't had the chance to listen to it yet, but I know about half of the bands from seeing them live or playing shows with them and a few are friends of mine & the NGNV crew. Crank it to 11 and then go see them live!

Pg. 99 Reunites to Play Doc. #8

I missed out on seeing this band live. I was willing to drive from Indiana to DC for their last show, but couldn't find anyone who wanted to go. From what I heard, it was a packed bunch of kids in some barn in Virginia or something. Well, they're playing Best Friend's Day this year, and I think it'd be cool to see them.

I also think Doc. #8 isn't thier best record. However, I'd be willing to go down to Richmond for A) the biscuits and gravy at the 821 cafe and 2) seeing a bunch of emo kids rolling around on the ground.

I just hope they can corral the band so the show starts on time. There's something like 10 people in this group.
More info here.

Anti Cimex Lives... On Film!

Fuck me man, sometimes I get sent the best shit ever. Just got this from 138 over in Sweden. It's a little movie from 1985 of Anti-Cimex just kinda, doing shit. Awesome footage of them practicing, playing gigs, taking bubble baths, shopping a the leather daddy store, etc. You know, punk stuff. Anyways it's pretty fucking epic, thanks for that 138. Check his site out at Can't Hate Enough. It's all in gobbledygook foreignspeak though...

Downsided - Demo 2011

I got this sent in by Sean from Boise ID, with this email:

Sean:You probably get this shit all the time, and I really don't give a shit if you don't end up posting it or whatever, but I thought it'd be good to let you know. I'm in a hardcore punk band from Boise, ID called Downsided. We started about six months ago, we've played a number of shows, and now we have a demo up for download. If you wanna get around to checking it out, that'd be rad.

Well Sean, your not giving a fuck seems to have worked my friend. Because here's me giving a fuck and posting it. Well, maybe it was a combo of your not giving a fuck, me actually being on top of my shit for the first time in fucking months, and this demo not being a complete fucking turd. In fact, I'd even give this the "pretty fucking good for a demo" seal of approval. Go out and get this shit mixed and mastered and you've got a great start to a full length.

Long and short, this is definitely some hardcore shit for sure. Definitely thrashy, dipping in to some Power Violence moments but still solidly punk rock. Excellent pit music, I'd see em for sure.

For fucks sake man, lay down a full length.

Devil - Magister Mundi Xum EP

Because Prolly gave us shit for posting a bunch of "shit from 2010" and then made fun of ME for posting Ghost (that was totally Blake man...) he said we could redeem ourselves by posting this Norwegian Witchfinder General knockoff called Devil.

Well Prolly, it's good. Rarely do I get to use the term knockoff as a compliment, but when you pull off WG as well as these dudes do, I'd say it's a good thing. Nothing new here folks, just old school doom metal?NWOBHM played by younger fellas. Whatever the fuck these dudes, Witchcraft, and all those cats are drinking up in Northland, it's keeping shit slow. Keep imbibing it fuckers.

All Pigs Must Die - All Pigs Must Die EP

Every once in a while, Brooklyn does something other than give the NY Times some hackneyed ass shit to discover. Like when they spew forth a band like All Pigs Must Die (Henceforth, APMD, cuz that shit's long to type.) I have no real idea who these dudes are, but, apparently, they're from brooklyn, they include Ben from Converge/Acid Tiger, and they play that weird ass metal punk crust hybrid I dig so hard. Shit's pretty fucking solid. If you like Black Breath, you'll like this. Cuz' the drummer's better. And they play faster. But they're not quite as catchy. But they're definitely hardcore as fuck.

Right anyways, fuzzy, fast, loud, hardcore, metal, punk, shit. Good. Getsum. You've probably already got it though cause we at NGNV pride ourselves on being like 4-5 months to 35 years behind the times. Fuckit man.

Crucifyre- Infernal Earthly Divine

Pretty good black thrash my buddy Christauf tipped me off to recently. No doubt his knowledge of this band has to do with it's pedigree with former members from bands such as Nasum, Morbid, and General Surgery. With an album title that gay, you know this band wouldn't even be a blip on the radar if they weren't from Sweden. A promising first album. I'm looking forward to see where they go from here.
